What needs a miller
Journalists advise: when interchamber locks are inserted, it is required to make a recess under the body and an end plate. Typically, this is done using a pen drill, but this method is labor-intensive and not accurate enough.

With the help of a mill, it is possible to ease the process of extracting material during the manufacture of an inrush pocket. In addition, the absence of impact on the door ensures its safety, and the accuracy of the processing allows eliminating the risk of unreliable fastening of the lock or its distortion.

True, before the start of the work it will be necessary to pass a small section on the basics of handling such a specific joiner’s tool. The fuser will fit almost any power – from 1.2 kW. It will require the purchase of a four-dimensional cutter with a diameter of 8-10 mm and as long as possible. Also, you need to buy a couple of small joinery clamps.

The most tangible benefit from the mill is if you have to hit up to ten identical locks at a time. In this case, it is enough to calculate the dimensions once, after which the installation process itself will be executed in a few minutes.

Measurements and markup
The process of cutting the mounting pocket in the described manner practically does not require the skills of controlling the manual mill. Instead, the correct marking and manufacturing of simple devices will be required.

So, let’s start with the installation of the handle. If the lighting is already mounted, the handle must be located on the same axis with the switches. There is another rule: to press the hand parallel to the torso and bend it in the elbow at an angle of 45 °. If now the handle is clamped in the palm, it will be its optimal height.

Now, you need to decide with the width of the pocket. The difference between the thickness of the door case and the lock must be divided by two. The value obtained is used to set the lateral stop of the miller, precisely this distance must be between the thumb and the edge of the cutter blade.

The height of the milling is determined by the place of installation of two overhead stops. In order to make them, it is necessary to twist two boards in the form of the letter G. At a long side, the emphasis is pressed against the clamp to the canvas, while at the same time it serves as a limiter to the speed of the mill. To correctly install the stops, you need to add a distance from the edge of the cutter to the edge of the sole on each side of the locking pin.

The marking of the end is done as follows: first the line marks the axis of the knob, then the desired distance from the upper and lower edges of the lock fall back from it. Then, from these lines, the distance from the cutter blade to the edge of the sole is retracted. It’s enough to simply calculate the distance from the edge of the canvas to the extreme marks to immediately mark the mark on all doors.

Consider one point: the angles in the pocket turn out rounded, and if the marking was carried out from the calculation of “pure” values, the lock body will not fit. It is also necessary to retreat up and down half the thickness of the cutter. You can also make the pocket more free, with a maximum tolerance of half the protrusion of the end plate on the side of the lock body.

Milling the pocket
Many have already caught the point: the mill is pressed by a side stop, the mill is immersed, then the tool moves between the overhead stops with the periodic addition of the depth of milling. Everything is simple at first glance: in order not to spoil the door leaf, it is necessary to take into account some ambiguous moments.

The first one – the door must be securely locked. To do this, you can lean it to the wall, and itself settle down in the hole, holding the canvas between the legs. It will not be superfluous to invite an assistant who will hold the door securely while the master is centered above the locking pin.

The second rule is the direction of the milling feed. It should coincide with the direction of rotation of the blades so that they do not burst into the material, but remove it against the feed force. Otherwise, the tool is virtually impossible to control: the mill throws up and it is difficult to hold it in your hands.

The third moment is the supply depth. It is sensible to first fix the cutter by immersing its shank in its full length. The maximum depth of milling at that will probably not be enough, but the singing of the cutter, the deviation from the dimensions and torn edges are excluded. When the pocket is cut to the permissible depth, it is necessary to measure how much you need to deploy, to put the cutter with the required take off, adding an additional 3-4 mm.
