What is a good thermal insulation at home? This is when it’s effective, reliable, and economically feasible. How safe is one or another insulating material, whether it is correctly selected for a specific structure or structure depends on the comfort and health of the tenants of the house, their state of health, both moral and physical. According to ProfiDom.com.ua, for today, a lot of thermal insulating materials are presented on the Ukrainian market. All of them have different technical and environmental characteristics, they are able to exhibit different properties in different situations. Some building materials contain dangerous materials, for example phenol, formaldehyde – which is due to the chemical nature of these materials. And that’s bad.
We will consider polystyrene foam, he – is known to everybody from childhood white foam, PPP. It does not contain any of the listed toxic compounds. In the structure of the PPS molecule, these chemicals simply do not enter, they simply are not there.
Missing there, too, and styrene. Styrene depolymerization can only be carried out under special conditions and at temperatures above 320 degrees. Under normal operating conditions, styrene is not oxidized. Thus, there is no reason to talk about the allocation of styrene in the process of using building PPPS units in the temperature range from minus 40 oC to plus 70 oC.
Modern high-quality polystyrene foam does not contain chlorine or hydrochloride, which means it is safe not only under normal operating conditions, but also in thermal reactions.
Statistics of the European Association of EUMEPS showed that the fact of full environmental safety has become the reason that 8 out of 10 private homes in Europe are insulated with high quality foamed polystyrene.
Another important point demonstrating the high safety of polystyrene foam – when installing the insulation of this material you can work without special protective equipment. PPP is chemically neutral, and when cutting boards from polystyrene foam does not form dangerous dust, which can damage the lungs and respiratory tract.
When stored, molds and fungi are not formed on polystyrene foam. It is precisely because of its bi-neutrality that expanded polystyrene is allowed to be used as packaging for food products, for the production of disposable utensils, for the production of medical containers for the transport of donor blood and organs.
From an environmental point of view, it is also important to dispose of polystyrene foam or its residues. So, modern polystyrene foam can be recycled 100% because it does not have radioactivity.
Further, in the conditions of individual construction, not only health is important, but also rational economy – money, time, and, of course, forces. Insulation of the outer walls of the house is one of the most important stages of work, since the climate of the house, the durability of the design itself and the maintenance of the wallet of the owner depends on the fast and competently arranged insulation.
The technology of laying insulation of polystyrene foam is simple and economical. The weight of each piece of polystyrene is much smaller than that of other materials, which means that the installation of insulation in many cases can be done without assistants. What’s also important – due to excellent insulation properties, with thermal insulation of a number of structures, the expense of expanded polystyrene will be significantly less than any other insulating material.
In general, when choosing a stamp polystyrene brand it is important to understand what exactly and how it will warm up – including in order not to overpay.
What is foam polystyrene
Foam polystyrene can be different, depending on strength, heat engineering parameters and, of course, density, which is always indicated on the marking:
Lightweight PPS (from PPS10 to PPS 14) will be useful for the middle layer of unloadable three-layer structures (pitched roofs, partitions, insulation of balconies).
Medium-density grades (from PPP 17 to PPP 23 and PPP 15) are logical to use for flat roofs, floors, and other moderately charged surfaces.
Heavy PPS (from PPS 25 and from PPS 20) will withstand significant loads, they are applicable to the floors of basements, foundations, basement floors. In addition, they will fit the foundations of garages, car parks, swimming pools, artificial rollers, rooms with refrigeration chambers.
Facade marks – marked with the letter “F”: PPP 15 F, PPS 16 F, PPS 20 F – are recommended for insulation of walls by facade heat-insulating composite systems with external plaster layers (FTK).
Of course, the higher the density of expanded polystyrene, the higher its price, however, even with the use of expensive grades PPP heat insulation home is much cheaper than when using other heaters.
