How to choose a sealant for homework
About the fact that they represent themselves, what kinds of species exist, where and how they are used, as well as how to choose the right sealant, says the National Encyclopedia of Construction of ProfiDom.com.ua.
What is a sealant in the broadest sense of the word? Building material based on polymers, vulcanizable at room temperature, used for gluing, sealing, filling small cracks and gaps, and retaining elastic properties after a complete drying. Sealants are sold in tubes and tubes. In the first case, the sealant is pressed into place by the hand seal, in the second – by means of a special gun.
Types of sealants
The main component is acrylate resin. After drying, they become less elastic. Have good adhesion with most porous building materials (concrete, brick, wood, and the like). Since they can not withstand low temperatures (below -20 ° C), they are used, more often, in premises for the sealing of seams of doorways and windows, filling cracks. After complete drying, it is possible to paint with acrylic paints under the color of the surface. They are unsatisfactory – more environmentally friendly, odorless, but degradable under the influence of water, and moisture resistant – withstand the ingress of a small amount of water. In any case, the chemical properties of acrylic sealants do not allow the use of them in places that are constantly in contact with water.
The main component is silicone (at least 45%). Highly elastic, even after a complete drying. Good adhesion, practically, with all materials, including non-porous: ceramics, glass, aluminum, and the like. Silicone waterproofing sealants and and are used to seal any joints and joints. Since silicone can not be painted on its own, it is produced, both in transparent, and already painted in different colors. Silicone sealants are divided into:
general silicone sealants contain at least 45% silicone rubber and at least 45% hydrophobic filler;
sanitary silicone sealant – contains antifungal supplements that prevent the formation of mold, which often occurs in bathrooms;
sealant for aquariums – on the one hand, it is not exposed to negative effects of the bio-environment of the aquarium; on the other hand, it does not emit any harmful substances itself;
window sealant – contains additives that inhibit the formation of mold and increase the resistance to ultraviolet exposure to sunlight.
How to choose the right sealant
Made on the basis of polyurethane. Highly durable and at the same time elastic properties of such sealants allow to use them at any work. The only disadvantage is high toxicity until it is completely dry. Therefore it is better to use polyurethane sealants for outdoor work and it is obligatory at work to use personal protective equipment.
Bituminous sealants. Serves mainly for roof repairs. They have very good adhesion to any roofing material. Atmospheric and moisture resistant. They are applied only at a positive temperature, but after drying, the negative values are maintained to -50 ° C.
Sealants for threaded joints
A separate kind of highly specialized sealants. As the name suggests, they serve to seal the carvings along with plumbing linen, fum tape and similar materials. It should be emphasized that, unlike other types of sealants that have several application areas, this is the most specific. It is used only for carving and, no less important, no other sealant for these purposes will not work!
It is possible to highlight the hybrid versions of sealants: acrylic latex, silicone-polymer (MS-polymer), but for today, due to the high price, they have not received much popularity.
The first thing to decide on is the volume of work. As already mentioned, sealants are available in tubes and tubes. If the volume of work is small, then it makes sense to buy sealant in tubes, but if it is planned to use a sealant more than 250 ml, then it makes sense to spend money on a gun under tubs. In addition, such a purchase will also be justified by the fact that it applies not only to sealants, but also for any other materials in a similar package (liquid nails, glues, etc.), that is, it can still be useful in the household.
The second is the manufacturer. Generally speaking, in stores you can find sealants of different manufacturers. The most famous are “Moment” (Henkel), Titan, Cerezit, and others.
Apart from them, there is a huge number of little-known people who do not have to list them. The cost per unit of production may differ in times.
