What is a liquid stone and how to work with it

One of the little-known and unusual finishing materials, it can be said, is plaster of liquid stone, or stone plaster. It can be used, both on the facade or the socle, and inside the premises, while the appearance of the building can be very different, and the process of applying such plaster – very simple.
Stone plaster, or liquid stone, is a special type of finishing materials with high aesthetic value. There are several variations, at the same time, all of them are minced natural minerals in a mixture with a polymer binder, in which, as a rule, translucent polyurethane or acrylic adhesive appears.

As a mineral filler, as a rule, use granite or quartz, less commonly – marble, crushed and past sifting process with the formation of grains in the size from 0.5 mm to 2-3 mm. For particles of a natural mineral to form a dense structure and have good adhesion with a binder, they cover the surface with a homogeneous layer; in the process of production, they are thoroughly washed off, achieving complete removal of the dust fraction, and then mixed with the plastics of the atmospheric cure by vibration method – in this form the product enters the finished form end user.

The material is quite rare, and it should be noted that in most cases, the use of such variants of finishing the mixture is prepared by the masters on their own. And this is not surprising: it is possible to find both a stone crumb and a binder on sale, also with a completely democratic value. In the end, the result is definitely worth the effort: the surface finish becomes a kind of stone powder with a qualitative appearance, excellent resistance to moisture and mechanical influences, does not lose aesthetic properties with time.

To give additional decorative value, a mixture of stone crumb with polymer binder is stained. At the same time, two methods of coloring are possible: the coloring of the filler, calculated on the settling of fine particulate particles in the pores of the mineral, or the coloration of the finished mixture, as a result of which the necessary tone is given to the binder in order to give an additional depth of color.

How to make a stone plaster yourself
In reality, a mixture of stone and polymeric glue, ready for application, can be met fairly rarely. But the availability of starting materials is good for self-preparation of the composition, often this precisely this circumstance makes it possible to provide a unique form of finishing.

As a mineral filler, which also provides high decorative value, choose finely crushed granite, shungite, quartz, sometimes jadeite and tourmaline – it all depends on the individual preferences of the customer. Requirements to the quality of raw materials are a bit: the absence of finely divided dust and the uniform size of the fraction.

Quite often, a mineral crumb before sanding is screened and washed by itself, which is not difficult, but it is possible to ensure a good adhesion of the filler to the binder, as well as to exclude the haze of the glue, thus guaranteeing the bright, pronounced color of the natural mineral and providing a spectacular game of light on the faces of chopped particles.

The fraction of the minced mineral is selected on the basis of individual preferences, but it must be remembered that grains larger than 2 mm in size form an unnecessarily rough surface and, depending on the quality of the binder, may have a higher probability of sinking. At the same time, the small size of the crumb (less than 0.5 mm) contributes to the formation of a monolithic and practically smooth crust on the surface, in which the specific qualities of the natural mineral are practically indistinguishable. On the whole, the selection of a stone chip and particle size represents an incredibly extensive field for creativity.

As for the binder adhesive composition, there are not so many variations in this respect. The polyurethane adhesive, the amount of which is determined from the calculation of 3-5% of the mass of the stone crumb, is more appropriate, and more precisely the flow rate is determined by the instruction. Adhesives may be single-component, ready for use, also formulations that require hardener application can also be used. All that is necessary for cooking – pour the required portion of glue into a bucket with a filler and mix thoroughly with the mixer, achieving full envelopment of stone particles. In the process of preparation and use of the mixture, it is very important not to allow the water to come into contact, it is almost immediately seized from the composition.

For internal work, a binder based on acrylic and copolymers is best suited for it. Its main advantage is the water base, due to which the release of volatile solvents in the process of application is excluded.
