What is a LVV beam: its properties, its advantages and disadvantages
Of the many building materials for wooden houses, it is possible to distinguish, the so-called, lvv lumber (LVL). To build from it, you need to understand what characteristics it possesses, where it can be used, and all the advantages and disadvantages of this material.
The journalists of ProfiDom.com.ua have found out that the abbreviation of LAN is derived from the English Laminated Veneer Lumber, that is, “lumber from veneer lumber”. It fully meets the technology of manufacturing the material:Firstly, the prepared beech of coniferous species of trees is cleared of the bark;
then the wood is soaked for a day, sometimes for a longer period;
then cut from the logs and make a 3 mm thick veneer;
the veneer is sorted and dried;
The layers of the veneer are glued together, the resulting timber is pressed, cut, marked.
The production process is automated, the computer program is responsible for scaling, aligning, blending the blanks, and the quality of the veneer is checked by ultrasound. The lvl timber can not be produced industrially, only on large-scale factories. In our country, the material is found under the brand Ultralam.
As you can see, the process of production is similar to the creation of ordinary plywood. The main difference is that in the LVB of the fiber the adjacent layers of wood are arranged in parallel. In one bar can be 7-9 layers of veneer. The most subtle beam or layer LVV has a thickness of 18 mm, the thickest – 102 mm. The width can vary in the range of 100 – 1800 mm, and the maximum length of the beam is 18 m. Such a wide range of sizes extends the possibilities of using a LVL LVL in construction.
Most often, LVL bars are used in the following areas:
as beams of inter-floor slabs;
creating large spans;
in power formwork systems.
Since the LVV beam is not afraid of moisture and aggressive environment, it is often used in the construction of indoor pools, baths and saunas, agricultural buildings and warehouses.
In addition, the material can be used as joints of doors and windows, to become the basis of facade glazing, used in the construction of stairs.
Among the characteristics of the lava bar, making it a popular building material, ProfiDom.com.ua notes the following:
the tensile and bending strength along the fibers is twice that of other sawn timber;
LVL bar does not support burning, smoldering and gradually fading;
not afraid of moisture, bioavailable;
the structure is uniform, the geometric dimensions are always exact;
does not give shrinkage, does not deform due to temperature and humidity changes;
good thermal insulation performance;
there is no risk of identifying wood vices.
Minuses in a bar LVL two – low ecological compatibility due to too much adhesive composition and high cost – about 35 thousand rubles per cubic meter. This somewhat limits the possibilities of using the material in the construction, but for the carriers, auxiliary structures, the LVV beam is a great option.
