How to insulate pitched roofs
Worldwide trend – energy saving – does not mean that it is necessary to insulate only the walls of houses. Of course, there are no other outlets in the high-rise buildings, but if you have a private house, then the roof insulation is practically an obligatory element of the energy saving system.According to the National Encyclopedia of Construction of ProfiDom.com.ua, the domestic company “Elit-Plast”, a manufacturer of penoplastryl Penoboard (Penobord), offers its own system of insulation of sloping roofs.
The general rule for the insulation of pitched roofs is the following: the insulation layer is laid over the rafters or wooden flooring, without interrupting any element of the structure. This laying technique will prevent the appearance of “cold bridges”.
Insulation of roofs with visible rafters
In the case of insulation of a sloping roof with visible rafters, there are its technological features:
As a waterproofing underlying vapor-permeable layer, a polymer-bitumen waterproofing membrane is used. It is laid on a sheath of boards under heat insulation from a warm side. Another option is to stack the diffusion waterproofing underlayer directly above the thermal insulation. Under the insulation, an additional vapor regulating layer can be installed, which further increases the tightness, although, given the calculations, this is not required.
The Penoboard slabs are fitted with bonded joints based on a masonry brick model with a dense connection, starting from the cornices and resting on a parapet rail, whose height is equal to the thickness of the thermal insulation. There should be no bridges of cold in the places of their connection.
The gaps between the heat-insulating slabs and the connecting elements of the structure must be filled with foam-polyurethane spray.
Thermal insulation boards are fixed on rails through longitudinal rails and board planks with the help of special fixing nails or screws.
Longitudinal rails must be drilled beforehand so that they are not damaged during installation.
It is very difficult to calculate the size of the fastening system for plates and longitudinal rails to the “lover”, therefore, invite experts.
Insulation of roofs with hidden rafters
If you have a roof with hidden rafts, then the order of warming up is somewhat different
The Penoboard slabs are placed above the rafters in the same way that it is used for a roof with visible rafters – from the cornices and standing on a parapet rail, the height of which is equal to the thickness of the thermal insulation.
Insulating slabs should not be used as a work platform!
Vapor-permeable, waterproofing, underlying layers are laid over the thermal insulation under longitudinal rails.
The recommended thickness of the longitudinal edges is not less than 40 mm. This will provide sufficient ventilation under the roof and a reliable foundation for fixed racks or wooden boards bearing the roof.
